Salt Chlorinators
Clarkee's Pool Care Guide - Salt Chlorinators
Salt chlorination is like your own chlorine factory right beside your pool. It automatically adds chlorine to your pool every time your filter is operating and the unit is on. It is the easiest, most effective way to keep your pool safe and sparkling.
Basically, a salt pool has salt added to the water. It’s nothing like the level of salt in sea water, so you will hardly taste the salt at all. A salt chlorinator is attached to the return line of your filter system and passes a small electric current through the salt water flowing through the cell and produces chlorine. Eventually the salt cell will wear out and require replacing. On average this is between 4 and 8 years. Of course, UV light can still destroy chlorine produced by a salt chlorinator, so we still strongly recommend the use of Filtrite Sunscreen in outdoor chlorinated pools. The salt level will fall over time and usually a few bags per season are needed to top up the salt level. Your local Clark Rubber store can test your salt level and advise if it is falling too low.
TIP: Never add salt to a pool by putting the whole bag into the pool and letting it dissolve. Always open the bag and distribute salt throughout the pool and then brush the salt with a broom. Undissolved salt laying on the pool surface can cause staining.
Salt water pools still require the correct water balance just as any other type of pool. Not all pools are suitable for salt chlorination. Your local Clark Rubber store can advise you if your pool is saltwater compatible, and also advise you on buying the right salt chlorinator for your pool.
