How often should I clean my caravan mattress?

Whether you're just getting out of the city for the weekend or travelling Australia in a caravan, you need to be confident that the bed you're sleeping on is clean and free from germs. If you or your fellow travellers have asthma or allergies, it's also important to keep the mattress free from dust mites and other allergens.

A mattress for a caravan fixed bed should ideally be cleaned once every month. If you often sweat during the night, or you have allergies, it could benefit from weekly cleaning every time you change the sheets. Read on to find out how to clean your mattress and how often a caravan mattress needs to be replaced.

How to clean a mattress

The most important thing to know when cleaning a mattress is that water should be avoided. Mattresses absorb water and take a long time to dry, and this can cause mould and mildew to form inside, leading to more serious problems.

The best way to clean a mattress is with a vacuum cleaner. A small handheld vacuum doesn't take up too much space and can be an indispensable item to bring on the trip. After removing dust, hair and other dirt from the surface, you can get to work spot treating stains, using cleaning products or home remedies and trying to use as little liquid as possible to avoid it soaking into the mattress.

Now the mattress is clean, it's time to make it dirty again by sprinkling baking soda over the surface. This absorbs any remaining moisture and removes odours, and can then be vacuumed up. Leave your mattress to air dry outside the caravan (weather permitting), preferably in direct sunlight so the UV rays can kill any remaining dust mites and bacteria.

How often to clean bedding

Bed linen should be changed once a week, or more frequently if you sweat or bring in dust and dirt from outside. Give your mattress some time to breathe before fitting fresh linen.

Bedding should be washed in hot water, following the instructions on the label, whether you use a bucket and detergent, campsite laundry facilities or bring along your washing machine.

Mattress covers should be cleaned once a week if you sleep on them directly. If you sleep on a top sheet, the cover can be cleaned at the same time as the mattress. Pillows should be washed every few months and replaced every few years.

When to replace a mattress

Just like your mattress a home, a mattress for caravan fixed bed should be replaced after about 10 years, as this is when the springs and foam can start to weaken and offer less support. There may also be mould, bacteria or other dirt that's accumulated inside over time.

As many caravan beds are irregular shapes and sizes, you should choose a custom caravan mattress designed to the specifications you need. Clark Rubber and Slumberest have launched an exclusive partnership to offer customised caravan mattresses in a range of styles, protected by antibacterial treatments to help keep your family safe on the road.
