Why is total alkalinity important?
Low alkalinity can cause pH to bounce or change quickly with small chemical additions. High alkalinity increases acid demand and can contribute to scaling if pH is also high.
Glossary terms:
Total Alkalinity (TA) — The measure of carbonates and bicarbonate salts in water that helps stabilise pH.
pH — A measure of how acidic or alkaline the water is.
Scale — Hard deposits (often calcium-based) that can form on surfaces and equipment, including salt cell plates.
