Get Your Pool Ready for Cyclone Alfred – Clark Rubber's Tips
With Cyclone Alfred approaching, it's important to protect your pool and equipment. Here’s how to prepare and recover:
What To Do Now - Pool Preparation for Cyclone Alfred
As Cyclone Alfred is approaching, it’s essential to take preventative measures to protect your pool and your equipment.
Our team of Professional Pool Technicians have put together the following expert tips to minimise damage and ensure your pool is kept safe.
Cyclone Alfred Pool Preparation
Secure or Store Loose Items
Securely tie down or move loose items inside like pool furniture, umbrellas, toys, and accessories to reduce the risk of them becoming hazardous flying objects.
Do Not Drain the Pool
When the pool is full, the weight of the water inside the pool counteracts the pressure from the surrounding ground, preventing the pool from shifting or "popping" out of the ground during flooding or heavy rainfall. The water level can be lowered slightly to allow for overflow but not emptied completely.
Protect Electrical Equipment
Turn off and unplug all pool equipment, such as pumps, chlorinators, heaters, and lights, to avoid damage from power surges or flooding.
Remove Pool Covers
Strong winds can damage or carry pool covers away. Ensure they are rolled up and store them safely indoors.
Balance Water Chemistry
Treating your pool with algaecide before the cyclone helps reduce the risk of algae and bacteria growth from rainwater and debris.
After the Cyclone has passed - Pool Recovery
Clear Debris
After the cyclone and when it’s safe to go outside, remove any debris such as leaves, branches, or foreign objects from the pool. Check and empty skimmer and pump baskets before restarting your equipment to ensure there aren’t any obstructions and blockages that could cause damage.
Inspect Pool Equipment
Check all equipment for visible damage before turning your system back on. If the equipment has been flooded, allow it to dry for 24-48 hours before testing.
Adjust Water Levels
If water overflowed, backwash media filters or siphon excess water carefully to bring it back to regular height, halfway up the skimmer box.
Balance Pool Chemistry
We offer free water tests in-store. Have your water professionally tested at your local Clark Rubber Pool Shop. Keep an eye on:
- pH, chlorine, and alkalinity
- Salt levels (for saltwater pools)
- Phosphates and algae treatments
- Clear Muddy or discoloured Water
Use flocculant to clump dirt particles together and vacuum them out to waste.
